Nba Lockout

EPPENGER, JALIL MS. HARRIS ENGLISH 10/3/11 #1. ( why the NBA Lockout hasn’t been a triumph? ) NBA LOCKOUT I feel the NBA Lockout has been one of the most exceedingly terrible, episodes to ever occur, throughout the entire existence of the NBA. It hasn’t made fans glad and the players in the alliance have been vexed as well. I’ve saw that NBA players have attempted to defeat this circumstance by having various groups, not related with the NBA to play in. This has appeared there enthusiasm and love of the game. The NBA lockout has spurred a few players and lowered a great deal of them. I saw that a great deal of players have continued trying sincerely and are keeping steady over their game all through this confounding time. I feel the NBA lockout spellbound the mid year for NBA b-ball. There was nothing to anticipate other than European b-ball in the mid year. The NFL had the option to conquer its issues with agreements and business arrangements and end their lockou t before the season started.I don’t comprehend why the NBA can’t make sense of their concern. The NBA doesn’t have about the fan base of the NFL. The extreme deficiency of the period will truly hurt the NBA, considerably more than the NFL. The last NBA lockout was in 1998-99 season. The year Michael Jordan resigned for the second time in his vocation. It was an awful time likewise for the NBA much like this one. This additionally discolored the game of b-ball. I wouldn’t be astonished if some NBA players left the NBA to play overseas. The game abroad is increasingly coordinated, harsh, and expertise orientated from what I’ve seen. The NBA is increasingly about star-force and physicality. I feel a great deal of job players in the NBA would thrive all the more abroad, on the grounds that they can be allowed the chance to exhibit their abilities, and addition some acknowledgment for themselves. By and large, I feel the NBA and their players’ aff iliation will deal together to settle on a gainful consent to determine this issue simply like the NFL did. it will simply require some investment devouring.

Environmental Crisis Exposed in The World Is Too Much With Us and Gods

Ecological Crisis Exposed in The World Is Too Much With Us and God's Grandeur  In his sonnet, The World Is Too Much With Us, William Wordsworth accuses present day man of being too self-indulgent.â Likewise, Gerard Manley Hopkins shows how the manner in which we treat nature shows our loss of otherworldliness in his sonnet, God's Grandeur.â We are savage by lacking legitimate thankfulness for, being isolated from, and mishandling nature.  Man needs appropriate appreciation for nature.â People frequently are oblivious in regards to nature's extraordinary beauty.â It moves us not, says Wordsworth.â Many individuals never observe a dawn or a nightfall since we are excessively worried about the hurrying around of our modest universes to welcome the plushness around us.â We don't perceive the creation that God has presented to us.â In his sonnet, Hopkins shows how the Earth is God's creation:â The world is accused of the magnificence of God. He attests that God's work is still to be seen in nature.â We don't generally understand that we get the entirety of our riches from nature.â We regularly overlook that little we find in nature is ours.â Even our bodies are a piece of nature.â â â In the Bible, it says that we were made from the residue of the Earth.â Full gratefulness isn't constantly appeared for the Earth, making us brutal to nature.â â â   â â â â Many people are estranged from nature.â They are isolated from nature due to the profound change of the landscape.â There are hardly any common things left in landscape.â The dirt is uncovered now, nor can foot feel being shod.â Hopkins utilizes this line to clarify how distant man is with nature.â We can't feel the ground under our feet in view of the shoes we wear.â Mankind likewise fears nature.â We are apprehensive ofâ The breezes that will... ... We are isolated from nature, we dread nature, and we abuse animals.â Man likewise mishandles nature.â We use nature to bring in cash, we abuse nature, and we dirty nature.â Mankind is hugely insensitive to the environment.â We should be touchy to nature or the Earth will become like the world in H.G. Wells' tale, The Time Machine.â It will be loaded up with slight Eloi.â Underground there will be white, primate like Morlocks.â Giant crabs will meander sea shores, and the main remainder of the present reality will be relics kept in a Museum of Green Porcelain.â â â â â â  All should peruse Hopkins' sonnet, God's Grandeur, and Wordworth's sonnet, The World Is Too Much With Us so everybody will understand the man's duty to nature.â If we need our youngsters and grandkids to appreciate the personal satisfaction we have today, ecological issues must be revised at this point. [Guest Post] Dating Is Hard

[Guest Post] Dating Is Hard A friend of mine (whose honesty, even under cover of anonymity, is something to strive for) wanted to release this into the world, as it has been an interestingly prominent part of his MIT experience. Knowing that whats in here and what has been strategically left out could fill a few pages of MIT Confessions, I applaud him for writing more meaningful words in a few hours than I have in a few months (Ill blame writers block). Enjoy!  _,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,__,.-~-.,_ As someone who is definitely not qualified to give out advice regarding anyone’s love life, I definitely will not be giving you any advice whatsoever about your love life. However, I do hope someone out there can relate to my experiences as a wildly emotional gay boy who thinks too much. This also isn’t a coming out story, mine is pretty boring. We’re gonna start right off the bat with ~love~ or whatever 16 year old me thought love was. I guess I figured love was being able to picture yourself getting married to that person, having kids with that person, getting old with that person, etc etc. It turns out I do that with every boy I remotely have feelings for. So I ended up dating a boy (we’ll call him boyfriend #1) for a couple of years and told myself that, despite getting gas-lighted many times, I was still definitely in love with him because I could still picture getting married to him. So we revelled in the teenage dream that is high school romance and I was like yeah I love this dude. And then at some point I was like wait do I? Yup, turns out I didn’t. So moving onto boyfriend #2. I thought okay now I DEFINITELY know what I’m doing. I’m an experienced man and I am ready to begin this mature relationship with this boy I like. And then MIT happened (not getting admitted into MIT, that happened during boyfriend #1, but actually physically going to MIT). He ended up going to a school closer to home, I ended up flying to Boston and going to the good ol’ institvte, and I told myself sure, I can totally handle a long distance relationship, I’m in love. Yup, turns out I couldn’t. So here I am, in a new city, surrounded by people I don’t know, and I tell myself that was a great decision, I can do whatever I want now, I am a free agent. However, what people don’t tell you, is that sometimes, dating is hard. I quickly found out that when roughly 13% of a population of students identifies as non-heterosexual  and a little more than half of those people identify as male, you dwindle down the pool of available men. Factoring in the percentage of the student body that you actually interact with based on the classes you take, where you live, and how involved you are, the selection gets smaller and smaller. Of course this doesn’t suck for everyone, I commend all of you who can successfully snatch dates on Tinder or join clubs or even just go to a single Queer West event; you rock. But for me, dating was hard. Tinder was full of people who I would match with and never speak to. Grindr was full of people I didn’t really want to talk to. And real in-person interactions only happened once in a blue moon. After experimenting a bit with apps and dates with people I had just met (safely I might add), I reached the conclusion that I was either destined to be celibate or just not a fan of apps (fortunately I’m pretty sure it’s the latter). Then one day I had a sort of epiphany. I told myself if you want to find a boyfriend you just have to go for it…right? So I did. I messaged my friend who had a friend who wore sweaters that made me…suspicious.** It was nice! For once I went on a date that didn’t make me uncomfortable, and I was happy, and I found a boy that I enjoyed spending time with, and all these things combined made me feel warm inside. And then I was like wait am I…in love? Yup, turns out I wasn’t. If you couldn’t tell by the fact that my first definition of love was based on an imaginary future that I pictured with a boy who I had been dating for maybe a month at that point, my romantic mind can get a little inflated at times. This was no exception. My idea of “love” was me obsessing over every interaction I had with this boy. I would count the minutes between every text we exchanged and analyze what exactly he meant by “hahaha” (I mean three ha’s?? Is that better than haha? Was it just a creative decision or is he trying to tell me I’m worth more than just a haha???). I would expertly position myself in the lecture we had together so he would walk by me and I could say hello. I did a lot of things that might make people question my sanity. But, as life tends to go, our “relationship” or whatever you might call it, ended along with the semester and (I’d like to think) we’re still friends. And here I am, still a wildly emotional gay boy who thinks too much, so who knows if I’ve learned anything from my trials and tribulations. Maybe the mere fact I can look back on these relationships and say yeah that’s a little crazy is a good sign? Or maybe writing it out is therapeutic in a way. Who knows. However! I have not given up! There is actually someone I’ve got my eye on, but that’s a work in progress. One last thing, it turns out not everyone comes out the second they get to college and not all gay people are openly gay in the way you might hope. Apparently people don’t wear signs that say “YES I am interested” or “NO I would like to be friends”. But that’s part of the fun I guess. We’ll see. For now, my rom-com saturated brain will just hope that potential-future-love-interest-boy will read this, know exactly who I am and that I am specifically talking about him, and we’ll fall in ~love~. Whatever the hell that means. **disclaimer I know that making generalizations about the clothes people wear is not a great way to try and determine their sexuality, but I am by no means perfect. I was merely hopeful due to the clothing choices of said boy. Post Tagged #LGBTQ+ #love

Why Do Scandalous Lawsuits Involving Athletes Abusing...

Nobody would argue that the quality of sports is basically dependent upon the level of skill of its players. As the skills of the players improve, so too does the quality of the game. So why are substances that would further athletes’ skills beyond human levels so ostracized? Doping is the practice of using steroids and other illegal substances to boost performance in sports and athletics. The debate of the morality of such substances has been going on for decades and continues to affect the world of sports in many ways. At the moment, steroids and all other performance-enhancing drugs are banned in their entirety from nearly all sports in most countries of the world. Scandalous lawsuits involving athletes abusing substances are constantly popping up, usually involving players and athletes that were considered fan-favorites or even heroes. Performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in sports because it would make it easier to control them, allow athletes to perform better, and widespread use of steroids would allow more solid research and advancements in the pharmaceutical field. Some would argue that if athletes used steroids, impressionable youths would be compelled to as well. Because many children view sports stars as role models, people argue that athletes using drugs would lead to children experimenting with them. This is plausible, when the fact that children imitate nearly everything they see. And since childrens’ bodies are weaker, the side effects of

Theme Of Allegory In The Birthmark By Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne was the author of multiple short stories and poems, all of them in the Dark Romantic genre. Hawthorne gained his inspiration at home with his mother, sisters, and his wife, Sophia Peabody who was a poet as well. In his writing, one of his strongest traits was his use of allegory. Hawthorne often uses allegory in his short stories to add a different perspective onto his many works. In his short story, â€Å"The Birthmark,† Hawthorne utilizes foreshadowing and symbolism to portray the allegorical lesson that striving for perfection results in troubling outcomes. Hawthorne uses the device of foreshadowing to show how aiming for perfection results in an outcome that one does not expect. This is evident when he writes, â€Å"Aylmer†¦show more content†¦Georgiana’s birthmark is the main symbol in the story that could have multiple meanings. It is clear what the birthmark symbolizes when Georgiana declares, â€Å"I am happy to put my life in your hands,† (Hawthorne 3). Aylmer is ready to start his experiment when Georgiana says she is willing to be a part of it. What Aylmer does not know is that the birthmark actually symbolizes her mortality and when she says she is happy to put her life in his hands, she actually means that her birthmark is her lifeline and she is happy to put it in his hands. Aylmer wanted his wife to be perfect, but he only made the outcome worse with trying to remove the mark. Another example of symbolism is when Hawthorne writes, â€Å"The mark was usually a deep red color,† (Hawthorne 1). The color red could symbolize one of many different things, but it mainly symbolizes the color of blood. Blood is a main part of one’s body and mortality, and when the birthmark is described by its deep red color, it means that the mark is her source to life. After the tragic death of Georgiana, Aylmer finally realizes that the birthmark really had been her mortality. Aylmer is so deeply caught up in forcefully trying to get Georgiana to let him remove her birthmark, he does not recognize the true perfection that was there all along. Symbolism helps the theme that is portrayed throughout the story that trying to be flawless results in a devastation. Skills such as computer knowledge, bookkeeping, customer service, human relations, reading and writing, verbal communication, and active listening are an essential part of being a dental assistant. APRO students already obtain these skills. This report shows how becoming a dental assistant is a great career choice for APRO students. With only an additional eight to ten months of training, an APRO student could become a ental assistant and earn a great wage, as well as acquire many sought after job perks. Job perks of a dental assistant include Monday to Friday daytime hours, free dental care, monthly or yearly bonuses, and medical benefits. Dental assistants primarily work in dental offices; however, there are jobs available in health care units and hospitals as well. The research that was conducted for this report consis ts of both primary and secondary sources. The primary research sources include an interview of a local dental assistant, as well as the researcher’s own experience and knowledge. Secondary sources of research include Google searches, ALIS website, STATS Canada, and APRO text books. The three main aspects covered in this report are as follows: 1) Occupational Inventory a. Work environment b. Perks c. Market trends 2) Personality Fit d. Stress level/mental strains e. Personality traits recommended/required 3) Future Potential f. Continuing education requirements g. Advancement opportunities Potential Career Choice: Dental Assistant Introduction Weekends off, daytime hours, decent wages, free dental care, medical benefits, and yearly bonuses! These, in many cases, are the perks that career seekers are looking for. Look no further. These, among others, are the perks the career of dental assistant has to offer. One might think that dental assisting has nothing to do with the tasks or skills learnt in the Administrative Office Professional program (APRO); however, there are many duties involved in dental assisting that relate directly to APRO knowledge. Skills such as computer knowledge, bookkeeping, customer service, human relations, reading and writing, verbal communication, and active listening are essential in a dental assisting career. As an APRO student, one obtains those skills. However, an APRO student would need to further their education. A dental assistant training program is needed to pursue a career in dental assisting. This training program would typically only be an additional eight to ten months over and above the APRO program. The APRO program is a good foundation as it gives students many of the basic skills needed to be successful in any program or career area. The dental assistant program differs by educational institution, but for the most part, prerequisites include a 30-level of English (which all APRO students already have), biology, and chemistry. Dental assisting is a very diverse career. One never knows what sort of situation or emergency may arise. For example, an appointment may be as simple as a routine check-up or a filling, and may be as complicated as a tooth breaking off at the gum line during an extraction which can lead to dental surgery. Duties of dental assistants are as diverse as the job itself. Duties will change from office to office, and day to day, but will include tasks such as: * Prepare patient, sterilize and disinfect instruments, set up instrument trays, prepare materials, and assist dentist during dental procedures * Take and prepare dental diagnostic x-rays Record treatment information in patient records * Take and record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patient * Provide postoperative instructions prescribed by dentist * Assist dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies * Instruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs * Apply protective coating of fluoride to teeth * Schedule appointments, prepare bi lls, and receive payment for dental services, complete insurance forms, and maintain records using computer or manually Because dental assisting does entail working in someone’s mouth, it may not be appealing to everyone. However, dental assistants are a vital part of the heath care profession. Most people have, at some point in time, experienced the excruciating pain of a tooth ache. Without dentists and dental assistants, one would have to suffer through the pain, or extract the tooth one’s self. One might choose dental assisting as a career if one enjoys working in an office environment, prefer daytime hours, and the medical field is of interest to them. There are many perks associated with being a dental assistant such as wages and bonuses. Dentistry is a rapidly growing field, therefore leaving many new jobs available both now and in the future. One who enjoys helping others, and wants to make a difference in the lives of many, would be satisfied in the career of dental assisting. Dental assisting is a relatively low stress-level job. Because life-long learning is a required part of being a dental assistant, one must have a love of education and be committed to life-long learning. This report will look at the occupational inventory of dental assisting, including work environment, job perks, and market trends. It will also look at the personality fit for one interested in seeking a career in this area. The personality fit will include such information as the stress level of the job, personality traits required/recommended, and potential interests and passions one might have. Finally, this report will look at the future potential of this career choice for APRO students. The future potential will share information such as continuing education requirements and advancement opportunities. The facts and findings in this report are based on both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources include an interview with a dental assistant. I chose to interview a local dental assistant who works at Dr. Lo’s office here in Brooks, Alberta. The researcher will also be using her own experience and knowledge as primary research. The secondary research consists of Google searches, ALIS website, STATS Canada, and APRO textbooks. Facts and Findings Occupational Inventory Occupational inventory is an especially important aspect of a career because it looks at things such as work environment, career perks, and market trends. These specifics can help one decide if a certain career, in this case dental assisting, is right for them. Work environment. Dental assistants have a variety of different working environments to choose from. Dental assistants work as part of a dental health care team. Their duties can vary and can include working as chair-side assistants, intra-oral assistants, administrative assistants, community health assistants, sterilization assistants, research assistants, or treatment coordinators. Dental assistants can also work in dental sales and insurance or dental education. However, dental offices are the primary employer of dental assistants, with 97% of dental assistants working in dental offices. Typical hours of dental offices are Monday to Friday, 8 a. m. to 5 p. m. Some offices, however, are open during the evenings and weekends to accommodate a larger portion of the population. As shown in Figure 1, according to STATS Canada 2011, 99% of dental assistants are women. In larger offices, one can expect to work alongside many women. In smaller offices, on the other hand, one can expect to work closely with the dentist and a few other staff. Figure 1 Gender of Dental Assistants Perks. There are several perks in the career of dental assistant. These perks may include good wages, good hours, free dental care for one’s family, yearly or monthly bonuses, and paid continuing education. As shown in Figure 2, according to the 2011 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, Albertans in the Dental Assistants’ occupational group earned between $15. 00 and $34. 00 per hour (2011 Alberta Wage and Salary Survay, 2011). Therefore, the average wage of dental assistants in Alberta is around $26. 40 an hour. As stated previously, most dental office hours are Monday to Friday, with daytime hours. In many cases, dental offices provide their staff with free dental care for both the employee and the employee’s family. Many offices offer incentives in the form of either monthly or yearly bonuses. If the office is busy and makes over a certain amount of money in a month or year, a percentage of the excess money will be awarded to staff according to seniority and hours worked. Because dental assistants are required to keep up-to-date with their education and skills, most dental offices pay for continuing education. Figure 2 Current Wages Earned for Dental Assistants Current Wages Earned for Dental Assistants| Wages| Low (5th percentile)| High (95th percentile)| Average| Median| Starting| $15. 00| $27. 00| $21. 82| $23. 00| Overall| $21. 00| $32. 57| $26. 40| $27. 00| Top| $25. 24| $34. 00| $30. 14| $30. 47| Figure 2 Figure 2 Market trends. Over 4,100 Albertans are employed in the Dental Assistants’ occupational group. It is expected to have an annual average growth of 3. 2%, which is above average. (Dental Assistant’s Occupation Group, 2012) It is expected that about 131 new positions will be created each year, in addition to job openings created by employment turnover. Employment turnover is expected to increase as members of the baby boomer generation will be retiring over the next few years. Figure 3 shows the estimated yearly growth of dental assistant positions available in Alberta over the next few years. Figure 3 Estimated Yearly Growth of Dental Assistant Jobs in Alberta Personality Fit Being happy and comfortable at work is very important. One usually spends more time at work than they do anywhere else. Therefore, the personality fit of a given career, specifically dental assisting, is crucial. Personality fit for a career includes the stress level and mental strains, personality traits recommended, and personal interests and passions. Stress level/mental strains. Dental assistants can come across some stressful situations. Sometimes, a procedure does not go as planned, leaving it up to the dentist and dental assistant to determine what to do next to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient. Although this may not be a regular occurrence, a dental assistant must have critical thinking ability and work well under pressure. When an appointment runs over time, this often leaves the next scheduled patient waiting longer than anticipated for his/her turn. This can sometimes lead to a stressful situation if the patient who is waiting does not understand the situation. Overall, most dental assistants have a low- to moderate-level of stress in their everyday work. Personality traits recommended/required. Dental assistants are required to work closely with their patients and co-workers. In order to communicate well with both patients and co-workers, one should be kind, patient, outgoing, an active listener, and organized. The ability to stay calm while under pressure and during emergencies is essential. Because dental assistants work side by side with dentists, one must be a team player and pay close attention to detail. It is the dental assistant’s job to know what the dentist needs next. Personal interests and passions. One who has a passion for helping others and for making a real difference in people’s lives may enjoy being a dental assistant. One should also have a general interest in the medical field. Dental assistants require continuing education; therefore, life-long learners would be satisfied in this career. Future Potential In many cases, employees want to be able to advance within their career area. Therefore, looking at the future potential of a career, in this case dental assistant, determines whether or not it is for him/her. Future potential information includes continuing education requirements and advancement opportunities. Continuing education requirements. Dental assistants must maintain their competency through the CADA Continuing Competence Program (CPP) (Dental Assistant Registration Process, 2012). This program assesses, maintains, and monitors ongoing knowledge, skills, attitudes, and judgments of professional dental assistants. According to the Alberta Government, dental assistants must do the following activities each year in order to keep their Continuing Competence current: * Complete one hundred (100) hours in the dental field, or three hundred (300) in the past three (3) years * Review the Competency Profile * Complete the Competency Self-Assessment * Complete a Proposed Learning Plan by the renewal deadline * Undertake appropriate Learning Activities to complete your proposed Learning Objectives * Keep the proof of your completed Learning Activities. At least once in every five years you will be asked to send in Verification of Learning documents and Completed Learning Plans. CADA will want to see evidence of two completed Learning Objectives for each year Advancement Opportunities. Depending on the size of dental office, there are advancement opportunities for dental assistants. Although a dental assistant is a dental assistant, there are different skill sets and knowledge levels involved. If a dental assistant has furthered his/her education with advanced courses in specialty areas, for example, he/she would make a higher salary. Also, some dental assistants move on to be administrative managers of the dental offices where they work. Conclusion Based on the facts and findings in this report, dental assistant is a great career choice for APRO students. With only an additional eight months of training, an APRO student can have the opportunity to be a vital part of the health care system by becoming a dental assistant. Many of the skills already learnt in APRO are essential in the career area of dental assisting. If one loves to work with people, is outgoing, patient, and loves helping others, dental assisting may be for him/her. If one chooses this career path, one can look forward to good pay, hours, and benefits. References 2011 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey. (2011). Why Should We Honor Our Veterans Essay Essays

Why Should We Honor Our Veterans Essay Essays Why Should We Honor Our Veterans Essay Paper Why Should We Honor Our Veterans Essay Paper A veteran is someone who fought in a war as a soldier, sailor, etc. However, this definition is not close to describing he heroism of these veterans, who lay down their lives for American freedom. Jeff Miller once said, move willingness of Americas veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude. On Veterans Day, we gather to honor those who have served our country, whether it was five years ago, or fifty. Whether they served in the Persian Gulf, or Bosnia, we gather to revere them and give them the respect and the thanks that they deserve. We thank them for protecting us from those who mean to do us harm. After all they have done for us, medals seem insufficient. All veterans deserve to be recognized for their valiant actions. Veterans, who have served in wars, such as Vietnam, the Korean Expedition, and most recently, the war in Iraq, had to spend months at a time, not only away from their family, but also in very dangerous battle zones. In 2010, Sergeant Salvatore A. Giant sprinted through heavy fire to get his squad leader to safety in Afghanistan. He fired at the enemy while running straight through their lines. Like this, they had to be willing to compromise their lives in order to save a fellow soldier or innocent civilian. With every war we have fought, some of these people have died, been wounded or have been driven mad from mental anguish and are forced to relive their traumatic experiences. Veterans are true heroes, and they will always be in the hearts and memories of all Americans. Everyone in the United States should use this one day not as a day to relax, but as a day to honor the veterans who have strives to work towards protecting our freedom. Veterans who willingly put their lives in danger to ensure our freedom, deserve to be recognized as heroes in my eyes, as well as everybody else.

How to Pronounce Chongqing, One of Chinas Major Cities

How to Pronounce Chongqing, One of Chinas Major Cities Learn how to pronounce Chongqing (é‡ Ã¥ ºâ€ ), one of Chinas major cities. Its located in South-west China (see map) and has almost 30 million inhabitants, although much less live in the urban center itself. The city is important because of its manufacturing and is also a regional transportation hub. In this article, we will first give you a quick and dirty way of how to pronounce the name if you just want to have a rough idea how to pronounce it. Then I’ll go through a more detailed description, including analysis of common learner errors. The Quick and Dirty Way of  Pronouncing Chongqing Most Chinese cities have names with two characters (and therefore two syllables). There are abbreviations, but these are rarely used in spoken language (the abbreviation for Chongqing is  Ã¦ ¸ . Heres a brief description of the sounds involved:   Listen to the pronunciation here while reading the explanation. Repeat yourself! Chong - Pronounce a shorter choo in choose plus -ngQing - Pronounce as chi- in chin plus -ng in sing If you want to have a go at the tones, they are rising and falling respectively. Note:  This pronunciation is  not  correct pronunciation in Mandarin. It represents my best effort to write the pronunciation using English words. To really get it right, you need to learn some new sounds (see below). Pronouncing Names in Chinese Pronouncing  names in Chinese  can be very hard if you havent studied the language; sometimes its hard, even if you have. Many letters used to write the sounds in Mandarin (called  Hanyu Pinyin) dont match the sounds they describe in English, so simply trying to read a Chinese name and guess the pronunciation will lead to many mistakes. Ignoring or mispronouncing tones will just add to the confusion. These mistakes add up and often become so serious that a native speaker would fail to understand.   How to Actually Pronounce Chongqing If you study Mandarin, you should never ever rely on English approximations like those above. Those are meant for people who dont intend to learn the language! You have to understand the orthography, i.e. how the letters relate to the sounds. There are many  traps and pitfalls in Pinyin  you have to be familiar with. Now, lets look at the two syllables in more detail, including common learner errors: Chà ³ng  (second tone)  - The initial is a retroflex, aspirated, affricate. What does that mean? It means that the tongue should feel like the tongue is slightly curled backwards as when saying right, that there is a small stop (a t-sound, but still pronounced with the described tongue position) followed by a hissing sound (such as when urging someone to be quiet: Shhh!) and that there should be a sharp puff of air on the stop. The final is tricky in two regards. First, English doesnt really have a short vowel in this position. Its reasonably close to choose but should be short. Second, the nasal -ng should be more nasal and further back. Dropping you jaw usually helps.Qà ¬ng  (fourth tone) -  The initial here is the only tricky part. q is an aspirated affricate, which means that its similar to the ch above, but with a different tongue position. The tongue tip should be down, lightly touching the teeth ridge behind the lower teeth. -ing should have the same nasal as above, too, but with an i and an optional schwa (roughly the vowel sound in English the) inserted after the i and before the nasal. The are some variations for these sounds, but  Chongqing (é‡ Ã¥ ºâ€ ) can be written like this in IPA: [ʈʂÊ °uÅ‹Â  tÉ•Ê °jəŋ] Note that both sounds have stops (the t) and that both have aspiration (the superscript h). Conclusion Now you know how to pronounce Chongqing (é‡ Ã¥ ºâ€ ). Did you find it hard? If you’re learning Mandarin, dont worry; there arent that many sounds. Once you’ve learned the most common ones, learning to pronounce words (and names) will become much easier!

Science fiction writing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Science fiction writing - Essay Example If so, then life can be traced back to the single element that composes all living things – which is carbon. Is the fifth element the carbon? We are not sure. The four elements were of course obvious even if the film was not explicit about it. As we already know in our physical world, the four elements are earth, water, wind and fire. Recent movies were also made about the four elements such as The Last Airbender and even a band was named after it that made the four elements a common knowledge. In our chemistry class, the fifth element is boron but it cannot be because the fifth element in the film was supposed to come from outer space that will be used by the extra terrestrial Mondoshawans to defeat the Great Evil that attacked earth. Also, combining the four other elements by the fifth element to become a Divine Light that will defeat Zorg and the Great evil sounds more like religion than science. It is not plausible to explain in scientific terms because it rests on faith r ather than facts and science. Again, the Egyptians were used as a conduit by the Mondoshawans aliens to leave the elements that will defeat the Great Evil. ... They were just economically prosperous so they have more time for study, research and discovery of their natural world which is why they were advanced and not because an alien lend them their technology. The only thing that is scientifically plausible in the film is the reconstruction of Leelo where her hands were used to build the whole thing (Leelo). This science is called cloning where another life can be reconstructed from the codes contained in a DNA sample which in this case is the hand. Albeit its propriety is highly debated, the application of this science (cloning) is already done in animals and was it was quite successful in recreating another life from mere DNA codes. In the case of the reconstruction of the Fifth Element, the DNA sample may have been collected from the remains of the hands of the original Leelo and from there, the fifth element was recreated which is scientifically plausible. II. The world and technology In my opinion, the movie The Fifth Element was one of the few exceptions in sci-fi movies where technology should harmonizes with the world as it narrate the story. The Fifth Element movie did not necessarily follow this formula yet it was a success both in the box office and among critics. The plot of the story was good although it was not grounded on sound science. We are instead entertained by the good visuals of the film (fight scenes, space scenes, etch) and the exceptional rendering of the actors and actress including the enchanting song of the opera singer who contained the four elements. There was nothing scientifically enlightening in the film whereby the audience will understand how some scientific concept works. It may be a sci-fi film but it also

Allstate Insurance Company and the insurance industry and the affects of globalization and technology

Globalization and Influence on Corporations In many cases, corporations consider globalization as a matter of taking a superior business model and extending it geographically, with basic modifications, in order to exploit the firm’s economies of scale. Based on this perspective, therefore, the corporations’ key challenge is simply to decide how much to adapt the business model—how much to standardize from country to country versus how much to localize to respond to local differences (Ghemawat, 2004).Ghemawat further says that the future of the globalization process is by no means obvious since he looks the market will integrate further once economic conditions improve.
